Whitestown Beach

Whitestown Beach

Cooley-Peninsula-in-County-Louth

Whitestown beach is a cobble beach at the east of the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth. The cobbles were deposited there by ice during the last glaciation and given their rounded shape by the continuous action of the tides.

It is possible to find granite from the Mourne Mountains, disk-shaped cobbles of metasediments from the lowlands of Co. Down, chert (flint) and chalk from Co. Antrim and many large and impressive examples of fossil bearing limestone from the surrounding area. This walk will appeal to the geologist in all of us.
